Second Life: 8

Welcome to the TRC Second Life wiki. Here we will post resources to help our Newbies get a good foundation in Second Life as well as share resources for more advanced users. Any group member can submit a new page. The Second Life blog will be used to journal our experiences in Second Life and announce meeting opportunities online. Our initial goal for participation in Second Life will be to support building community across the state with our science and mathematics STEM community. This includes participating k12 educators and the science and mathematics Instructional Team Members at participating universities and education service centers. Second Life will be one of a suite of community building, collaboration, and communication tools used to build the TRC Online Learning Community, supporting our professional development programs.

Creating a Free Second Life Account
Participating in the Second Life 3d virtual environment is free, and requires that you create one or more accounts with Linden Labs, the creator of the Second Life environment. When you visit the Second Life environment you will do so with a representative avatar after logging in with your avatar's first and last name along with a password. You can define more than one account and log in as a different avatar for different purposes. We will help you define an avatar that you can use when attending TRC and other education events. Since you can make up your avatar's first name, many people visit Second Live anonymously. Because our use of Second Life focuses on building a professional online learning community, we are recommending that you have one avatar that displays your real life name. You can create additional avatars with anonymous names to use when shopping or visiting some of the entertainment venues in Second Life.

There is more than one web site which allows you to define a new account, with the primary difference being which orientation island you will visit upon first arriving. Second Life is many things to many people, and frankly a bit like the Web in its early days with little boundary between those using the environment for learning and those using it for entertainment. We will give you some guidance that will help you succeed in the vast education community in Second Life. That said, our selection of Second Life as one of our community building tools is indeed because it is engaging, fun, and interactive.

The primary web page for Linden Labs is http://secondlife.com. You define your first Second Life user account and avatar visit the New Media Center Center web site, listed below. The New Media Center is a higher education organization made up of individuals who are seeking effective use of multimedia in education. They have a large number of projects in Second Life. Creating your user account through this web site will land you at the NMC orientation island when you first join Second LIfe. The NMC orientation island has many resources to learn the basics of the Second Life environment.

Now that you have an account, and have received an email from Linden Labs with your password, download the Second Life application for your platform.

After entering your Avatar's first name, last name, and password, click the Connect button. Your avatar will Rez at the New Media Center orientation island. Begin exploring using your keyboard's arrow keys to move your Avatar. Note that when you first arrive, you mean need to wait for a few minutes before all objects rez. This is especially true of the signs as they will likely be the last to download.
