Land of Extremes

Land of extremes, fire and ice
creating tension between

cold pelting rain of force and prolific,
powerful thermal sprays
of moist steamy plumes
harmoniously painted corrugated metal structures
weathered wood-framed habitats
run-away boulders – sloping green fertile valleys
among hidden mystical people reflected in the mirror of reality.

Land of extremes, fire and ice
creating tension between

neutrality – action
treasured language – acronyms of technology

paganism – Christianity
among eroded landforms of imaginary figures,
prideful doorways to discovery and
surfaces violated by scribble-coded graffiti of youthful unrest.

Land of extremes, fire and ice
creating tension between

grey-cast skies and arched hued -colored rainbows
white arctic terns – black-feathered ravens
milky opaline ore – brick-red jasper
wet – dry
sun – rain
whaling stations – whaling watches
gritty black sandy covered beaches – fractured land
separating Europe and America by a volcanic belt of anticipated eruption.

Land of extremes, fire and ice
creating tension between

viscous liquids of intense force and political power for development
dwarf birch trees hugging mounds of survival – delicate pink lamb’s grass
wind – calm
five-gaited horses – mountaineer vehicles
sheep – cows
fish – fowl
among a global network of advanced technologies.

Land of extremes, fire and ice
creating tension between

cascading waterfalls and tongues of slippery glacial ice
deep craters – cloud-covered mountains
explosive liquids – parted earth
violent past – peaceful future
a nation of poets and writers unified by age-old sagas
of the Viking spirit of yesterday.
